Christmas Story

I have decided to continue ranting. Blame yourselves.

People that know me, know that I lean left, and that I don’t have much time for religion. I do, however, quite enjoy Christmastime. I love getting together with my family and feeling all warm and fuzzy.

Any thinking, caring person is horrified that there are people fleeing war and poverty, with nowhere to go, except up against a wall or into an area where nobody wants them. We should all try to do what we can to help these people. Especially at this time of year. It’s a no-brainer in my eyes.

Over the past week, I have seen a great many posts that are, with the most noble intentions, using the Christmas story to emphasize the plight of refugees. In an effort to encourage critical thinking, I am going to try to help, because the use of the Christmas story is just a little bit odd.

The Christmas story, if my memory serves, is actually this:

A dude cleverly decides to take his extremely pregnant wife on a trip to another town so he can pay his taxes. They can’t find a hotel, because everyone else is doing the same thing, and they left it to the last minute. You know how it is. One kind hotel-person decides to let them sleep in the barn. They do. The wife goes into labour and gives birth without any complications. Some other dudes arrive and give them expensive gifts.

I mean, really. Nothing like the plight of the refugees. If that is the worst thing that has ever happened to you on a trip somewhere, then you really should try touring with a band…

Damn.

Merry Christmas everyone.
